Summit County Prosecutor
assists in recovering lost funds
The Office of the Summit
County Prosecutor has indicted Rachel Kirk,
former treasurer, for grand theft and misuse of
credit cards of the Breast Cancer Fund of Ohio.
“We are saddened that this had to happen,” says
Marshall Ruchman, who serves on the Board of
Directors, “but glad that we are moving forward
in our attempts to recover the funds that should
have gone to breast cancer patients.”
The
disputed funds were discovered in May 2010, when
Ms. Kirk resigned from the board and financial
records were transferred to the Board of
Directors.
As a direct result, the Board adopted
financial guidelines to ensure that all monies
donated to the organization are used to further
the mission of the organization: help Ohio
breast cancer patients survive the hardships of
cancer treatments by providing emergency
financial assistance. The Board agreed to adhere
to the Financial Accountability Standards of the
Ohio Association of Nonprofit Organizations in
order to maximize financial accountability and
transparency. In addition, all checks for more
than $100 must be signed by two persons, and the
Board will receive copies of all financial
statements on a regular basis.
The Breast Cancer
Fund of Ohio supports organizations throughout
Ohio that help women and men who are coping with
the day-to-day challenges of living while being
treated for breast cancer. 100% of funds raised
